Admiral Tom Hayward Biography
Tom Hayward is a retired navy admiral and chief of naval operations. He was born on May 3, 1924, and grew up during the Great Depression. He credits much of what he learned during his childhood to his father, who taught him everything about discipline. He also became a pilot at a young age. Shortly after the end of his senior year, World War II broke out. Hayward enlisted in the V-5 program, a program for naval aviator cadets, and served in active duty during the war. After the war, he went on to attend the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. There, he picked up his love of aviation. After he graduated from the Academy, he served as an engineering officer and officer of the deck. He served as a pilot in the Korean War. After the Korean War, he became a test pilot for experimental aircraft. His favorite aircraft was the F8U-Crusader. He was also one of the 11 astronauts to be selected for the Mercury Program, which was the first US human spaceflight program. During the Vietnam War, he served as Commander of Air Wing Ten and was made commanding officer USS America and USS Graffias; he was awarded the Legion of Merit. He then served as Commander of the United States Seventh Fleet and United States Pacific Fleet in 1975 to 1976, and ended his 40 year career as Chief of Naval Operations under President Ronald Reagan from 1978 to 1982.
